Your body is made of the same elements that lionesses are built from. Three quarters of you is the same kind of water that beats rocks to rubble, and wears stones away. Your DNA translates into the same twenty amino acids that wolf genes code for. When you look in the mirror and feel weak, remember the air you breathe in, fuels forest fires capable of destroying everything they touch. On the days you feel ugly, remember: diamonds are only carbon. You are so much more.
Sympathy and empathy are separate terms with some very important distinctions. Sympathy and empathy are both acts of feeling, both are acts of caring for someone, but with sympathy you feel for the person; you’re sorry for them or pity them, but you don’t specifically understand what they’re feeling. Sometimes we’re left with little choice but to feel sympathetic because we really can’t understand the plight or predicament of someone else. It takes imagination, work, or possibly a similar experience to get to empathy. Empathy can best be described as feeling with the person. Notice the distinction between ‘for’ and ‘with’. To an extent you are placing yourself in that person’s place, have a good sense of what they feel, and understand their feelings to a degree. It may be impossible to be fully empathetic because each individual’s reactions, thoughts and feelings to tragedy are going to be unique.
Yet, the idea of empathy when your decisions may affect the world around you, implies a much more active process. Instead of feeling sorry for, you’re sorry “with” and have clothed yourself in the mantle of someone else’s emotional reactions, ‘before’ and even ‘if’ you are personally affected by it yourself. The operative word here is ‘before’. Also, regardless of empathy, understanding that to everything in life there is a ripple effect, may not always keep you from making mistakes, but you’ll be more likely to weigh the pros and cons of every decision. It implies an understanding of the human condition, an understanding that we are all connected and affected by each other. That is where true compassion and kindness manifests in a person. When I see that in someone, it truly fills me with admiration.
Missing the Tumaini kids tonight. I can’t wait to see them again, and there is so much I hope for them. Hope is that thing the wind carries through the world, whispering in every ear a song of courage and perseverance, a song that you’ll never stop hearing. It touches everyone and nobody is immune to it. It only stops until your deepest wishes and goals become a reality, or when you no longer exist in this earth.
You don’t get better on the days when you feel like going. You get better on the days when you don’t want to go, but you go anyway. If you can overcome the negative energy coming from your tired body or unmotivated mind, you will grow and become better. It won’t be the best workout you have, you won’t accomplish as much as what you usually do when you actually feel good, but that doesn’t matter. Growth is a long term game, and the crappy days are more important.
